A Note on Deep Diving Awareness
When Professional Guides Take You Deeper Than Expected
Recently, I shared my dive experience at Scoglio Remaiolo, where we reached a maximum depth of 45 meters. While reviewing my dive profile in Octologs later, it got me thinking about diving safety and situational awareness during guided dives.
The total dive lasted 44 minutes, with only a portion at maximum depth. Though my dive computer handled the decompression stops appropriately, and everything was perfectly safe, it's worth noting that even with a deep diving specialty, we should always stay mindful of our depth limits and dive profiles.
What this experience reminded me of:
Even with professional guides, keep an eye on your depth gauge
Know your personal limits and comfort zone
Understand your dive computer's readings and warnings
Be aware that exciting dive spots might tempt you to go deeper than planned
I'm not sharing this as a warning, but as a gentle reminder that depth awareness is part of being a responsible diver. While the dive was beautiful and safely executed with proper stops, it's good practice to actively monitor our depth during guided dives.
Keep diving, keep exploring, and stay depth-aware - even when following experienced dive guides. After all, every diver is responsible for their own safety, regardless of who's leading the group.
Safe diving!
